Living Lab Grensland: shaping the future with wood

The construction sector is moving toward a circular logic in which materials last longer, can be reused, and continue to create value. Wood plays a defining role in that shift. It stores CO₂, maintains its qualities over time, and brings a timeless aesthetic to architectural spaces.

With the completion of the three-year Living Lab Circular Wood Cluster Grensland, in which Woodstoxx participated as an active partner, a clear conclusion is now available. The project shows that circular building with wood is not an ambition on paper, but a path that holds up technically, economically, and aesthetically.
A trajectory that turns knowledge into practice
For Woodstoxx, the Living Lab was above all an exercise in building expertise. Its value lay not only in the cases explored, but in what they revealed: the potential to give wood residual streams a new life without compromising on quality or expression.
The recent Made in publication confirms this. Prototypes and test setups demonstrated that reuse at scale is feasible and that the sector is ready to move further in this direction.

Economic and ecological benefits combined

Circular materials are often perceived as the more complex or expensive choice. The Living Lab results show the opposite. Smarter material flows reduce waste and lower ecological impact. At the same time, they create economic value by extending the lifespan of resources. Once expertise is shared across the chain, the wood ecosystem becomes stronger and more efficient.

Our role in the future of circular wood

Woodstoxx aims to contribute to this evolution. Not by claiming to have all the answers, but by helping develop them. By investing in research, reprocessing, and reuse. And by sharing insights with architects and building partners so that material choices become more intentional, consistent, and future-oriented.

For us, building with wood is not a trend. It is a structural choice for quality, responsibility, and an architecture that evolves with time.
